Chicago Bears rookie left tackler Chris Williams who was the 14^th pick in the 2008 first draft underwent surgery Aug. 6 to repair a herniated disc in his back and is hoping to gain full fitness and rejoin the team during the season. He said that it was tough on him first but he knew surgery was the only option. He was thankful to god that this injury took place early in his career and not later and he was young enough to recover from it completely. Williams strained his back July 24 training camp practice in Bourbonnais. He was first administered with anti inflammatory medicine but as it wore off, his situation worsened.

 

The offense is creating headaches for the coaches at Chicago Bears. This was evident after the overtime 29-26 loss to Seahawks. Quarterback Rex Grossman had a day to forget. While he can’t be blamed for all the mistakes, Kyle Orton seemed edging closer to getting the quarterback spot after directing a 2 minute drill late in the 2^nd half.  Defensively the team looked composed and strong but offense was in a mess. Last season was something that Chicago Bears would not want to forget about. The team’s defense was all over the place and was ranked 28^th last year. Tommie Harris was the only bright spot and played all the games despite having a knee injury. However Harris recently said in a press conference that this season was expected to be much better with most of the players fully fit. He also mentioned that the training camp was a success and everyone was gelling well. Any significant improvement in the defense will become evident next week when the Bears play Seattle in an exhibition match. All first line players are expected to majority of the game.

The Chicago Bears were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs 24-20 by a last minute touchdown pass by Tyler Thigpen in their first preseason game. The Chiefs made an impressive start to the game by marching 81 yards on 16 plays and a 18-yard completion from Brodie Croyle to rookie Brad Cottam. The Bears made a strong comeback in the third quarter with a series of touchdowns and took the lead. Toward the end of the third, Chicago capped an 80-yard drive with a 13-yard TD pass from Hanie to Brandon Rideu.  In the fourth quarter it was Thigpen’s 27 yard pass for a touchdown with 1:15 minutes on the clock that made all the difference to the final result of the game.

The disc surgery carried out on the lower back of Chicago Bear’s first round pick Chris Williams will keep him out of action for the pre-season opening games for sure, but one cannot tell at this moment about when Williams will be able to take the field for the Bears again. Lovie Smith, the bears coach, is very much disappointed with all the injury concerns that have happened to his number one left tackle pick, as all his plans involving Chris with the season nearing has gone for a toss now. The Chicago Bears think tank will have to dig deep in order to finalize on who will be the top quarterback player for them in the upcoming NFL season. Both the quarterbacks, Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton, are showing real progress in the practice sessions and the management are waiting for the Kansas City exhibition game on Thursday to decide on who among the two will be the starter for the Bears at the quarterback position this season. But, the impressive performances by Kyle Orton in the recent practice sessions, weighs him at a slimmest advantage over Grossman. The Bears fans have already bought their tickets for the Bears opening game regardless of who will be playing in the quarterback position.
